We all are aware with the fact that the pirate community had formed a major culture in the medieval and renaissance eras, despite its outlaw occupation. There was an era named “golden age of piracy”, when the piracy was touching the heights. A number of pirates were active during this era, which provided the stuff to the fashion world of the recent times. A large number of pirate shirts, pants and other outfits are inspired by these freebooters or their fictional avatars in the movies. A significant aspect to pay attention in this regard is that the period of the golden age of piracy varies on the basis of area. For instance, the Chinese golden age of piracy started, when it was going to end in the western world, where the Caribbean Sea was the major hub for the piracy. Some famous freebooters who gained popularity in their areas during their periods include Edward Teach or Black Beard, Bartholomew Roberts of Black Bard, John Rackham or Calico Jack, Anne Bonny, Mary Read and Ching Shih.

Edward Teach or Blackbeard: Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, was an English sea rover, who would operate West Indies and eastern coast of American Colonies. He captured a merchant vessel of France and renamed it as Queen Anne’s Revenge. He became one of the most notorious pirates of the western world. He was killed by Lieutenant Robert Maynard on 22nd November 1718.

Robert Bartholomew or Black Bart: He was the most successful pirates in the Caribbean history. Some of the people claim him as the real captain Jack Sparrow, whom we watch in the Pirates of the Caribbean films series. He made some laws also for the pirates. This notorious pirate would operate the waters of America and North Africa. He was killed in a battle in the year 1722.

John Rackham or Calico Jack: John Rackham or Calico Jack was one of the captains who were voted by the crew members. First, he became a quartermaster in the Charles Vane’s Sloop “Ranger”. Later on, the crew members showed their distrust in Charles and voted Rackham as a captain. There were some special characteristics of Rackham and his crew, which include his Jolly Roger flag and the presence of two female freebooters in the crew – Anne Bonny and Mary Read. The design of Jolly Roger flag is used today in many pirate costumes. Calico was captured in September 1720 and was executed in November.

Anne Bonny: Anne Bonny was one of the famous female freebooters of the history. She was of the pirate temperament since her childhood as it is claimed that she stabbed a servant girl with the table knife in the small age of 13. Anne married James Bonny, a poor sailor and part-time pirate. She came to Bahamas along with her husband. In Bahamas, James became the informant to the governor, whereas Anne became the mistress of Calico Jack. She also gave birth to the first child of Rackham. Besides, she actively participated in the act of piracy also. In October 1720, she was also captured along with her crew. But, there is no evidence found of her trial and execution. As per the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, she was ransomed by her father and came back to her town. Here, she gave birth to the 2nd child of Rackham and next year she married a local man named Joseph Burleigh, with whom she had 10 children. She died as a respectable woman in 1782 in the age of 80.

Mary Read: Mary Read was another female raider of Calico Jack’s crew. She was raised in male disguise by her mother in order to resume the financial aid by her paternal grandmother. In the young age, she joined the army and married a Flemish solider. After the early demise of her husband, she continued her services in military. She left military after peace and was forced by pirates to join their crew. She actively participated in the raids and was captured with crew in October 1720. She died in prison on April 1721 due to fever.

Ching Shih: Ching Shih was a famous Chinese pirate, who took command of the crew after the death of her husband Zheng Yi. She made some rules also for her crew. She has a large fleet of 17000 pirates and was so powerful that she defeated the forces of Qing dynasty as well as English and French navies. She was favored by king later on, and started a new life, married her husband’s First Mate and opened a gambling den and a brothel. She died a natural death in the age of 69.

Let’s talk about something different now, which may be somewhat off-topic according the theme of this website, but it may be of interest for many of you. You would have heard or read about some great warriors in history, but have you ever thought about the female warriors? Yes, there were the women in history who actively participated in the war and showed their strength against men.

Joan of Arc and some other historical female warriors

The name of the legendary heroine Joan of Arc is well-known by a large number of people in the western society as well as other locations of the world. This martyrdom of this brave girl is still remembered not only in her home nation France, but also in the other parts of the world. Large number of films and TV serials made on her life history is the perfect instance of her fame. More than 45 films and TV serials have been produced on her till date. The 2011 film “Jeanne” is her latest depiction. This film was produced in Germany. Moreover, a number of statutes, paintings and literature depictions are also available, which are based on her. The credit of coronation of Charles VII of France is also given to her. But, in the last, she was burnt in stakes by the English.

Similarly, many other women born in the distinct parts of the world provided the best examples of bravery in history. Some of these women include Queen Thyra of Denmark; Akkadevi, Rani Rudrama, Laxmibai and Chenamma of India; Devi Eleanor of Aquitaine and Isabella of France; and Hangaku Gozen of Japan etc.

Female pirates

Apart from the abovementioned warriors, there were a number of female pirates also, who were not behind the men in anything. We do not compare these lustful ladies with the saints like Joan of Arc, but still their bravery is subject to understand. Perhaps this is the reason, why the female pirate clothing is highly popular among women in the western world. First, we find the female Vikings in history. The name of Hetha, Wisna and Leagerda can be read in the history books. Besides, the western world witnessed some Caribbean pirates also such as Mary Read and Anne Bonny. Grace O’Malley can also be considered as a sea rover. On the other hand, there were the female raiders in the Far East Nations also. The popular Chinese raider and the captain of her crew, Ching Shih is best examples of the Chinese female swashbucklers. A number of pirate costumes in today market are named after these female freebooters.

Female warriors in mythologies

Interestingly, the mythologies of distinct nations also depict some female warriors. Amazon women of Greek mythology are still remembered, and their existence is a subject of debate among the historians. The legend of amazons claims about a place, where only the female warriors would rule, and men were raised as the slaves. Besides, the warrior goddesses of different mythologies are also the great depictions of the women’s bravery.

Article Content:
When we compare the gothic and pirate fashion trends, we find the similar characteristics. The same dark colored clothing, horrible metaphors like skulls etc., and more are found in both these subcultures. Sometimes, it becomes difficult to identify whether a particular piece of clothing belongs to which trend. Therefore, it always remains an excellent idea to combine these outfits while going to the pirate and renaissance festivals. For instance, you can wear the pirate shirts with gothic pants.

But, the concept behind the existence of dark colored outfits and the horrible accessories of these trends seem entirely different. The gothic culture is based on the stories, which believe in ghosts, vampires and the extreme capabilities of science and technologies. This trend was started with “The Castle of Otranto” of Horace Walpole written in 1764 A.D. and flourished with Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula”. More advancements could be witnessed in this trend with modern gothic films, such as Gothika, Rebecca, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and more. These supernatural themes actually indicate the negative traits of humanity. It appears that the people following the gothic trends were very much afraid with the ill-effects of industrialization and capitalism etc. Some of the people with similar mindsets started wearing the outfits, which we know today as the gothic costumes.

On the other hand, the dark shaded pirate clothing was the identity of freebooters, which they acquired because of their outlaw occupation. Moreover, they would keep the horrible signs like of skulls in order to create the terror among the vessels.

Now, we can clearly observe that the gothic and pirate cultures comprise of two different concepts. But, still there is a thing, which connects the two. More or less, the clothing and other metaphors are indicating the negative traits of humanity. The pirates were the outlaws of the society, who would plunder the ships. Moreover, they would perform a lot of killings in order to accomplish this purpose. Besides, some of them were very brutal. It is a known historical fact that the Bartholomew Roberts would cut the ears of a person and gifted them to him in order to convey him the message to listen him harder next time.

All the above mentioned activities definitely showcase the negative sides of the pirates. The terror, which they would spread, were the practical examples of this negative side. So, these two trends appear to be similar, but still we find a difference. The negative side, which Gothicism presents, is not the same as of pirate. It has nothing to do with piracy or any criminal act and it talks about the technological and financial aspects. Due to the scientific developments, industries are growing day by day, which are harmful for the nature. In addition, the financial greed of the human is also increasing, which results in the capitalism in the extremist form.

The Gothic fiction is an alluring aspect for the lovers of fashion as well as fantasy. This fiction has provided a lot of things to the fashion world. The gothic clothing often comes in the dark shades, which reflects the concepts of this culture. The concept of the modern Gothicism is highly based on the dark culture. Have in mind that the modern Gothicism has nothing to do with the pre-medieval Goths; however, there may be the involvement of some tidbits from that culture. The basic characteristics of this culture include:

Dark traits of humanity: The concept focuses on the dark traits of humanity. The reason behind this concept is that this culture was flourished during the Victorian period when industrialization was on the peak. Besides, various nations were facing the ill-effects of industrialization. So, these dark traits became the major source of inspiration for the gothic culture.

Supernatural themes: For the depiction of the above said negative traits, the writers of this concept have made the supernatural themes as the subject matter of their novels, such as ghosts and vampires. Bram Stoker’s Dracula is one of the most famous novels based on this concept. Similarly, a number of films have also been made on this concept in the modern times, like Dracula (based on the novel), Rebecca and Gothika etc.

Horrific capabilities of science and technologies: The horrific capabilities of science and technologies, is another major aspect on this fictional genre. This trend was started with Horace Walpole’s 1764 novel The Castle of Otranto, but flourished during the Victorian period, when steampunk science fiction was also in the limelight. Therefore, the influence of these two trends on each other was quite obvious. Like steampunk, the futuristic technologies have been fantasized in these novels, but in the horrific way.

Steampunk settings: Because of its close association with steampunk, the modern gothic film comprises of the steampunk settings.

Gothic architecture: One of the most significant characteristic of this concept is the gothic architecture, wherefrom the word is derived. The incidences take place in this fiction often take place in a castle or a building made through the gothic architecture. Horace Walpole was very fascinated with this architecture, which is why he mentioned a gothic castle in this novel The Castle of Otranto. Thereafter, most of the stories based on this subculture followed this suit.

Dark colored clothing: As mentioned above, the costumes of this subculture are available in the dark shades, because of the supernatural themes. Some of these outfits resemble the styles of the pirate costumes; however, the concepts of these two fashion trends are different from each other.

All these characteristics have made this concept unique and fascinating for the people.

There is no doubt that the gothic style is one of the most popular trends according to the modern tastes. Sometimes, when we think about it deeply, we find ourselves in the world of ghosts, vampires and a lot more similar entities. It is not surprising since the gothic clothing has the close relation with these supernatural themes.

The trend was started with Horace Walpole’s novel written in 1764 – The Castle of Otranto. It was based on the supernatural themes. Moreover, the castle mentioned in this novel is based on the gothic architecture. In the later years, a number of more novels were written on the same concept. Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula gained huge popularity throughout the century. In the modern era, the concept was adopted in the films, and a number of movies on the gothic supernatural themes were produced. Rebecca, Gothika, Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein etc. are some of the popular names in this respect.

This concept was actually based on the negative traits of humanity, which had been symbolized in the form of supernatural themes. The trend was flourished when industrialization and the ill-effects of capitalism were on the peak. A major characteristic of many of the stories of this theme is that the scenario is found in the steampunk settings. We can also see the horrific capabilities of science and technologies in the Goth stories.

Taking the inspiration of these traits, a number of men and women developed a new subculture in 1980s and 1990s. Gothic rock, clothing and a lot of other things reflecting the culture came in the limelight. The clothing culture became most popular. This culture is popular in the 21st century also. The gothic style clothing come in the dark shades, which reflect the theme of the culture. The styles of some of the costumes resemble the styles of the pirate clothing, which is also available in the dark color. But, it will be significant to mention here that the concept of gothic and pirate are entirely different from each other.

These Goth style dresses are made through distinct materials. The PVC outfits are widely popular in the gothic fashion world. Moreover, some of people wearing these outfits keep some other accessories also, which reflect the dark culture. Skull, dragons and a lot of other things related to the supernatural themes are the best instances in this respect. Besides, the women following this culture used the black colored lipsticks and nail polishes.

Fashion of full-length cloak started since the beginning of the civilizations. The undecorated types of garments are one of the simplest forms of the cloaks. The cloaks had been adopted by different civilization time to time and according to some analysis, the cloaks may have other names in the history such as burnous, which was an enveloping blanket used for protection from heat and dust. In today’s trends, the cloaks are widely popular among the modern, renaissance or medieval clothing fashion trends. The pirate cloaks are also widely popular today.

Since the early times, the cloaks were used as the night blankets. Romans and Scots used these wardrobes up to a high extent in the damp cold Britain. On the other hand, they were worn by the Arabs also in the Middle East in order to protect themselves from the chilly night atmosphere of the deserts. Even the word ‘burnous’ mentioned above, has been derived for the Arabic word ‘burnus’. It was a long white hooded cloak made from the coarse woolen cloth. Burnous was worn across North Africa by Berbers and Arabs.

There was another name for this attire in Britain, i.e., mantle. It was often used for the shapeless cloaks with arm slits. The word was derived from mentel, which originally meant the men’s cloaks. The term was survived for a long time for a loose garment along with two decorative silk tassels. Similar to the usual cloaks, the mantle was often flung on the shoulders causally. Throughout the 19th century, the term mantle was used very frequently. Many of the clothing manufacturers would like to call them mantle makers during that era.

Besides, there were different types available for the wardrobes, which can be considered as the proper cloaks. In the earliest times, the cloaks used to be in the circular shapes or had the circular-shaped wraps. They could have any designs from half-circle and full-circle. On the other hand, the fitted cloaks seem to be more modern, and it would involve tailoring. The reason for the tailoring was that the shape was given to them to fit the body, mostly around the shoulders. These cloaks first gained popularity as the renaissance costumes. But, a large number of people today think them the Victorian Opera Cloaks.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, the long cloaks were popular among both the genders. But, during that time span, it was respectable garment for women to cover up the body rather than a fashionable garment. The hooded cloaks were owned by the British village women. In 1800, some women would wear the highly tailored outer coats that were known as at redingote.

All these classic cloaks are the subject of allure in the fashion world of today. The cloaks in medieval, renaissance and some other styles are becoming highly popular these days. These cloaks are being designed with various new innovations. The modern innovations make the cloaks more adorable. In addition, they are the fashion trends today, which are perfect for the parties as well as the themed events.

The renaissance period in Europe was not as simple as many people think. It was a very complicated process, which went through a number of faces. In the renaissance age itself, a plenty of events took place that make changes in the society. Several changes had also been made in the medieval clothing, art, culture and even religion. Moreover, some notable changes could be witnessed in the field of science during this period.

Various philosophers, painters and politicians provided a great stuff to the people during this era. Some of the famous names in this respect include Marsilio Ficino, Leonardo Da Vinci, William Shakespeare, Sir Thomas More, Isabella d’Este and Desiderius Erasmus. These dignitaries gave their contributions in different fields. Leonardo provided the studies on various subject of science and made some wonderful paintings like Mona Lisa and flying machine etc.; Shakespeare became all time popular play writer; Isabella designed some incredible dressing styles and gave her contribution in the renaissance clothing; and so on.

In addition, the orthodoxy of the medieval period was abolished or lessened, and the new thoughts were welcomed. Protestant reformation by the dignitaries like Martin Luther and John Calvin played a vital role in this respect. Roman Catholic Church had become highly dogmatic during that era, which was obstructed by the Protestantism. After some time, the internal reforms also came in the light that was the next step in this respect. A religious war has also been recorded from 1560 to 1715.

Besides, some great explorations were also accomplished by various voyagers. The names of Christopher Columbus, Captain James Cook and Vasco da Gama were the subject of significance. These explorers embarked their ships to the other parts of the world and searched the sea routes to America, India and Australia. Many other such explorations were done, which are the subject of detailed study.

Another important aspect of this era was the scientific revolution. Usually, it is believed to be started from 1500 A.D. But, the proper phase is accepted from 1543 A.D. The revolution went through the three phases, which include 1543 to 1600, 1600 to 1642 and 1642 to 1730 respectively. The year 1730 is supposed to the end of the revolution, but the development in science and technology still continued.

The abovementioned aspects show not only the change in the society, but the complete transformation. All the things of this era were more or less influenced by the renaissance movement. This movement paved the way for the modern times. The entire western world of today seems to be influenced by this era up to some extent. Moreover, its influence on society can be witnessed in different ways. Today also, the people are so excited about this golden age of Europe. A number of renaissance festivals are celebrated in various cities, in which the glimpse of this era can be witnessed. The people wearing renaissance costumes, the renaissance age professions, one-act plays and a lot of other aspects of that era can be seen in these festivals.

You would be aware of the famous cyberpunk derivative – steampunk. It has the close association with gothic trend since both belong to the Victorian period. Still, there is the difference. Steampunk focuses on the science fiction unlike gothic which is based on the supernatural themes like vampires and ghosts. It is not any kind of science fiction, but the fantasy in which all the technological products are run through the steam energy because of the extensive usage of the steam engines in the Victorian period. But, we can find the import of other trend in the film or novel of one genre. For instance, many of the gothic themed novellas have the steampunk elements, and many of the punk-themed novels comprise of the gothic elements.

But, have you heard the name of Clockpunk? It may be strange for some of you but as a matter of the fact, it is another cyberpunk derivative fictionalized on the lines of steampunk. As steam punk focuses of the technology of the Victorian era, the clock punk is based on the renaissance age – the era of flourish of art, culture, painting, renaissance clothing and so on. Besides, the scientific revolution started, and the people had a lot of craze about the new technologies. In this period, the gadgets were run through the mechanical power. The clock refers to the mechanical energy and all the gadgets of this fiction run through it. Many of these gadgets were not invented during that era, but they have only been fictionalized based on the technology of that era. Another thing that is used in the clockpunk stories is the gun powder. Gun powder is used to power some of the devices. It acts as the battery, which was unavailable in the renaissance period.

Like steampunk, the clockpunk has also provided us a lot of films as well as the other art forms. Hellboy II: The Golden Amy, Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth etc. are some of the perfect instances of the clockpunk films. The scenario is set in the renaissance age in these films with people wearing the renaissance costumes. Besides, Elfstruck, Discworld and Tik-Tok etc. are some of the popular books written on the same theme. Interestingly, some of the novellas comprise of the combination of both steampunk and clockpunk, such as Pasquale’s Angel and Clockwork Earth. Various other things have been designed using this theme, such as toys, TV-programs, music and games.

This clockpunk innovation was started in the renaissance age itself. The portraits by Leonardo da Vinci, such as the paintings of flying machines, battle tanks and even robots are the perfect instances in this regard. Some people count them as the real life examples of the clock science, but as a matter of the fact, they could not be constructed since it was very difficult and expensive to make them during his era. They cannot be constructed in the present scenario because the better technologies are available today.

But, there are examples of real clock punk in the history also. The ancient Greeks had some pretty clockworks. Similarly, a medieval middle-eastern scientist Al-Jazari also invented some clockpunk type gadgets. Many other inventions were made in history in different time spans.

The trend of medieval and renaissance outfits is increasing among the fashion freaks in the western world. The wardrobes of every community of these eras are widely popular in the recent times. Interestingly, the dresses of the labor class peasants and the outlaw pirates are also popular today.

The community of peasants was supposed to be the socially lower class in history. These people would do hard labor, and they hardly had any time to be involved in the fashion. Therefore, their medieval clothing used to be simple and basic. But, today’s people seem to be very interested towards these outfits. Such wardrobes are worn a lot in the themed events like renaissance fests, some other themed events as well as the casual gatherings.

The special feature of most of these peasant dresses is that they are made through the soft material like cotton. Therefore, they remain comfortable for the people. In addition, a lot of modern dress sense is added to these outfits, which add some showiness in them. Moreover, these outfits are provided to individuals in the myriad of colors.

On the other hand, the pirates had the occupation to loot the vessels of the rich merchants. So, most of their outfits would also be looted. But, they would wear them in their own styles. Most of the pirate shirts, skirts, pants and other outfits used to be in the dark shades. It is guessed that some of the outfits might be ordered by them to be tailored in the same way they would get their special flags manufactured.

The outfits on the pirate styles have undoubtedly become widely popular in the present scenario for both men and women. A number of these dresses are also in the dark shades, but there are the other colors also. Some more colors, such as white, golden and chocolate etc. have been added to these dresses. Moreover, some of these outfits have the striped designs. In addition, some outfits come in the frilly as well as the ruffled designs. Some of the outfits also resemble the styles of fictional freebooters like Captain Jack Sparrow of Pirates of the Caribbean film series.

An interesting thing is that a large number of these outfits are named after many historical raiders, such as John “Calico Jack” Rackham, Edward Teach “Blackbeard”, Mary Read, Anne Bonny and Ching Shih etc. Some of the outfits are also named after the privateers, who were the authorized pirates to loot the vessels of the rival nations. The outfits in the name of Sir Francis Drake are the perfect example in this regard.

These outfits of peasants and pirates are unquestionably the subject of great allure today.

You have read about clockpunk in the last blog, which is a cyberpunk derivative that focuses on the renaissance age. We also mentioned that it has been developed on the line of steampunk, which is a derivative for the Victorian era. The steampunk focuses on the steam energy, whereas the products are run through mechanical energy in clockpunk.

One more derivative has come in our sight, which is known as woodpunk. As a matter of the fact, woodpunk is not counted under the steampunk derivatives officially. Besides, there is no film or novella in our knowledge except a sitcom, in which the wood punk technology has been depicted. But, still some people considered as another renaissance cyberpunk derivative. This concept imagines a technology in which every technological product is made through wood. The logic behind this is that the renaissance age was very much based on the wood; however, we cannot deny the fact that the other metals were also in the limelight, which have given birth to clockpunk.

First of all, the woodpunk has been fictionalized in some of the statutes made from wood of the technological items. Wooden tank, crane, robots and a lot of other things made through wood are part of this technology.

On the other hand, some people take the Bamboo technology as a type of woodpunk, which has been depicted in the famous sitcom of 1960s “Galligan’s Island”. In this sitcom, the jeeps and many other things run are made through the wood. But, it seems difficult to imagine to which era it belongs. On the other hand, the famous character Flintstones is an animation serial for children and a film also have some woodpunk elements, but we cannot count it in under this derivative in a proper sense. First of all, it is not set in the renaissance age with people wearing the flamboyant renaissance costumes. On the contrary, it takes us to the Stone Age, where everything is primitive. Besides, all things are not necessarily run through wood, but the other materials of the Stone Age have also been used such as stones and animals. Wood is being used since the ancient times; therefore it seems arduous to declare it a fiction of some particular era. Besides, it has a timeless approach.

There is also a big flaw in the concept of woodpunk. First, the wood does not represent any technology, and it is just a metal. Therefore, what powers the gadget – it has not been mentioned. On the contrary, we find the mechanical energy in the clockpunk, plus the gun powder has also been used to run of the products. Still, it presents a good concept for fun and amusement.
